Summary

A beautifully illustrated edition of the New York Times bestselling classic, timed to celebrate the pivotal 42nd anniversary of the original publication--with never-before-seen illustrations by award winner Chris Riddell

Seconds before Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor。

Together, this dynamic pair begin a journey through space aided by a galaxyful of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox--the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian (formerly Tricia McMillan), Zaphod's girlfriend, whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; and Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he's bought over the years。

Where are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? For all the answers, stick your thumb to the stars!

This year is year 42 since this book had been first published (nice coincidence)。 Despite that, it DID NOT get old。 Every time I reread it I discover that there are new things that I didn't catch the last time。Imagine the PG13 version of "Rick & Morty" but even more sciencey and equally humorous。 This year is year 42 since this book had been first published (nice coincidence)。 Despite that, it DID NOT get old。 Every time I reread it I discover that there are new things that I didn't catch the last time。Imagine the PG13 version of "Rick & Morty" but even more sciencey and equally humorous。 。。。more

This book gave me an existential crisis, but like, in the best way possible。 Would recommend!

I've only read this book once before (2 years ago, which feels like forever), and I'd clearly forgotten that while I enjoy the humor, the style of the narration, and the various descriptions of human items, the story itself was kind of meh。 For that, I'd say it's mostly because it's only the first part of a 5 book series。 Only reading the setup or a partial setup and not finishing the rest of the story tends to put a damper on things。 But enough about that。 The book wasn't very long, which was a I've only read this book once before (2 years ago, which feels like forever), and I'd clearly forgotten that while I enjoy the humor, the style of the narration, and the various descriptions of human items, the story itself was kind of meh。 For that, I'd say it's mostly because it's only the first part of a 5 book series。 Only reading the setup or a partial setup and not finishing the rest of the story tends to put a damper on things。 But enough about that。 The book wasn't very long, which was a plus, and the humor。。。ah, my love for the humor of this book。 Seriously, the dryness of the humor, the matter-of-fact narrating style。 Despite what I said above, I do want to continue reading the story; it's just that plot-wise the story is not enough on its own。 It's not complete without the rest of the story。 。。。more

It feels like one of those pop-culture things you had to be a part of when it exploded otherwise the impact isn't going to be as significant。 And because of the huge following it amassed, the references and phrases do crop up a lot in mainstream media to the point of being corny。 It's kind of like seeing the Eiffel Tower everywhere, that by the time you get to see the actual thing in Paris, it's a bit underwhelming。There were some genuinely funny lines and at times it did make me laugh。 But I pr It feels like one of those pop-culture things you had to be a part of when it exploded otherwise the impact isn't going to be as significant。 And because of the huge following it amassed, the references and phrases do crop up a lot in mainstream media to the point of being corny。 It's kind of like seeing the Eiffel Tower everywhere, that by the time you get to see the actual thing in Paris, it's a bit underwhelming。There were some genuinely funny lines and at times it did make me laugh。 But I probably would have appreciated it more if I read this at a time before I was familiar with the sci-fi genre。 If I did, it would be closer to a 4。 。。。more

It's a scientific book about a universe that created by the imagination of Douglas Adams。 I am 14 and I am asking for the meaning of life。 This book has answered me 。。。 maybe just a partial answer。 "You can answer the question clearly when you know what actually the question is" that make me thinking a lot。 It's a great book It's a scientific book about a universe that created by the imagination of Douglas Adams。 I am 14 and I am asking for the meaning of life。 This book has answered me 。。。 maybe just a partial answer。 "You can answer the question clearly when you know what actually the question is" that make me thinking a lot。 It's a great book 。。。more

It's an absolute joy to read - a breezy, humorous, quip-filled sci-fi novel, filled to the brim with hilarious coincidences and various Britishisms (I take the author is English)。 It's not far removed from Terry Pratchett, really, in terms of the style of humor on display。 I will leave the exhaustive summaries to others, as it is such a popular book - but let it be known I can't think of anybody who wouldn't like this book。 I gave it 4 instead of 5 only on the premise that it is a book that so o It's an absolute joy to read - a breezy, humorous, quip-filled sci-fi novel, filled to the brim with hilarious coincidences and various Britishisms (I take the author is English)。 It's not far removed from Terry Pratchett, really, in terms of the style of humor on display。 I will leave the exhaustive summaries to others, as it is such a popular book - but let it be known I can't think of anybody who wouldn't like this book。 I gave it 4 instead of 5 only on the premise that it is a book that so obviously sets itself up for a sequel - it's my opinion it feels unfinished if you read just this book alone - you must follow up with the next。 。。。more

Very quirky read that is redeemed by its satirical angle on human existence。 I never really fell in love with reading this but it was a quick and well-paced novel that is a classic for a reason。 Its ability to poke fun at the overwhelming worries many share about existential thought and our importance in the world overall was appreciated and witty。 The detail put into world-building a universe that is just as bureaucratic, strange, and worried as our own planet was appreciated。 I most enjoyed th Very quirky read that is redeemed by its satirical angle on human existence。 I never really fell in love with reading this but it was a quick and well-paced novel that is a classic for a reason。 Its ability to poke fun at the overwhelming worries many share about existential thought and our importance in the world overall was appreciated and witty。 The detail put into world-building a universe that is just as bureaucratic, strange, and worried as our own planet was appreciated。 I most enjoyed the various dry bits of humor accompanied with anti-climactic outcomes ranging from the answer to the universe, to the rulers of the universe being mice, and to the galactic president being our protagonist's enemy from the bar。 I'll probably end up reading the next couple of books in the series but at the moment I'm in no huge rush。 I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a kind of quirky and smile-inducing page-turner。 Now, finally, I understand the whole 42 bit。 。。。more

It is really humorous and wacky book。 I heard the audiobook version narrated by Stephen Fry and finished it in a a day。 I am sure it must have been way ahead of it’s time。 Maybe because I read it in 2021 I couldn’t appreciate it as much it should have been。 But it’s a really fun book and Stephen Fry’s narration made it all the way more enjoyable。

I honestly can't say what actually happened in this book。 Not sure if I can even count it as 'read'。 Listened to the audio book with Stephen Fry, which was nice, but it very easily turned into background noise that I just couldn't pay enough attention to。 I don't know if it's Stephen Fry's voice, the plot or the writing style, but I zoned out almost immediately and used it as white noise, despite actually wanting to read the book (somewhat at least。。。 I read it because I've always wanted to have I honestly can't say what actually happened in this book。 Not sure if I can even count it as 'read'。 Listened to the audio book with Stephen Fry, which was nice, but it very easily turned into background noise that I just couldn't pay enough attention to。 I don't know if it's Stephen Fry's voice, the plot or the writing style, but I zoned out almost immediately and used it as white noise, despite actually wanting to read the book (somewhat at least。。。 I read it because I've always wanted to have read it。 I bought a collection of the whole series when I was 16, but never got around to it。 I only really "read" it now because I'm doing a reading challenge with my colleagues)。 I had the same problem with Good Omens and the writing style is quite similar in what I imagine is a very common, old "nerdy" British way of writing "weird" stories。 Quite Monty Python-esque, that type of humour used in writing。 I kept imagining that 2010s "weird kid" stereotype that all teens fit into (including myself)。 "OMG I'm so randoooom!" That's, that's basically what I got from this story。Again, however, I could barely pay attention and barely remember the plot despite having just finished listening to the audio book。 I don't feel like my review is very fair towards the plot, but this is what I got out of it。 Probably not for me。 。。。more

Adams reminds me of a pretentious, nerdy 14 year old who thinks he’s funny (one that might, for example, describe a character as having “ridiculously brown eyes”)。 He has an ironic insolence, one that taunts the idea of a creator and yet calls the universe “creation”。 He makes constant references to humans as ape descendants or worm descendants which does get old, as does its general irreverence。 He speaks of suns or of days on other planets as if such things are likely to exist in an earthly se Adams reminds me of a pretentious, nerdy 14 year old who thinks he’s funny (one that might, for example, describe a character as having “ridiculously brown eyes”)。 He has an ironic insolence, one that taunts the idea of a creator and yet calls the universe “creation”。 He makes constant references to humans as ape descendants or worm descendants which does get old, as does its general irreverence。 He speaks of suns or of days on other planets as if such things are likely to exist in an earthly sense of the word。 Then there’s the immature jokes: a robot that commits suicide, ‘feeling’ like a man caught “in the act of adultery”, or the triple breasted whore of Eroticon 6– a character whose large intestine leaps through his neck to throttle his brain to keep him from reading poetry。 There is mild language (Bs—), etc。 There are much better books out there of this type- Sanderson’s Alcatraz series comes to mind。 。。。more

4。5 stars。 Honestly I have no intention of reading this book but then I went to the book store and instead of buying the book I had planned to buy for over a month I came out with this one。 Something in my gut just told me to buy it and I’m so glad I did! It is one of the weirdest and most random books I’ve ever read but it a super fun read and well written。 Highly recommend it!
